Sony Digital Passport Systems Ready to Help Americans Meet Stricter Federal Travel Regulations

Digital Passport SystemPARK RIDGE, N.J., June 1, 2009 - More Americans will need passport photo printing services to comply with new Federal travel regulations being enforced by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Effective June 1, all U.S. citizens re-entering the country via land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, must have either a U.S. passport or passport card. As a result, Sony expects that its digital passport systems will see even heavier use in more diverse applications.

Sony's latest version of its digital passport and ID photo printing technology, the UPX-C300 system, is designed to provide a range of end users -- including convenience stores, national retailers, leading drug store chains, and government agencies -- with an efficient and easy-to-use option. The system supports the standard size of a United States passport photo and meets the government's print quality and durability requirements, eliminating the likelihood of printing errors and rejected images, and increasing both customer satisfaction and retailers' efficiency and productivity.

The new DHS travel requirements represent the latest round of regulations under 2004's Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act that will result in virtually every U.S. citizen needing a government-issued and -approved document to establish identity and citizenship. For the last several years, more Americans have been obtaining passports and passport cards but many more have yet to do so, a trend that creates significant revenue opportunities for retailers.

Sony has delivered more than 21,000 units of its digital passport and ID photo printing technology, including the UPX-C300, since January 2009. These systems can be found at hundreds of locations across the U.S., including FedEx® Office, Rite Aid® Pharmacy, the United States Postal Service and AAA (Automobile Association of America).

Designed for ease-of-use, the photo size format required by most countries for passport use is pre-installed in the system's digital camera. Frame formats can be easily customized to suit other photo requirements such as a driver's license, and up to five customized formats can be saved in the system's digital camera. The system's LCD menu supports nine languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portugese, Dutch, Russian and Japanese) and prints both color and black-and-white photos.

Sony's digital passport and ID photo printing systems, including the UPX-C300, are available now.
