It's difficult to imagine a more harsh
and demanding environment than the top of a volcano, but that is exactly where a Sony XCD-SX910 IEEE-1394 camera can be found hard at work 24/7.
The location is the infamous Mt. Saint Helens in the state of Washington. A team of scientists with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) uses an XCD-SX910 camera to constantly monitor the growth of the central lava dome. The camera is aimed at a specific target monolith within the crater and can detect precise position changes measured in just millimeters. Data from the camera is routed to a Matrox image capture system for continual processing and analysis.
