An Interview with Phillip Linson, Vice Dean, American Film Institute Conservatory

Phillip Linson is vice dean of production and post production at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles. He supplies AFI fellows (film students) with the tools to bring their projects to life. First-year fellows create a total of 84 short subject productions from original scripts-all captured on Sony Digital Master tape, which is designed for DVCAM® and mini-DV camcorders.

"For each of these projects they're given four 64-minute Digital Master tapes for production," Linson explains. "And then they output to another Digital Master tape which is shown to the entire first-year class in what we call Narrative Workshop."

"They use the tape in all sorts of shooting conditions, whether it's interior under hot lights or outside ranging from the desert to the snow and by the ocean. I've been impressed by how well the tape performs under so many different shooting circumstances. Tape problems have not been an issue."

Would he ever consider switching to consumer mini-DV tape? "Never," Linson declares.
