The Staying Power of Sony DVCAM Format

Sony DVCAM FormatFor nearly a decade, the Sony DVCAM™ family of products has been the mainstay of government video production. From the White House to the Department of Defense, day-in, day-out, DVCAM camcorders and VTRs deliver excellent picture and sound quality that only a digital format can provide, along with high performance editing capabilities, and system versatility that makes it possible to migrate smoothly from analog to digital. Most recently, with a view toward the future, Sony provided users with the ability to migrate their content from DVCAM to Sony's most advanced XDCAM's™ tapeless workflow environment.

A full product line-up for digital acquisition, editing and program playback, and a proven track record for reliability and robust performance, have led to the continued acceptance of DVCAM format products by government users, production facilities and broadcasters around the world.

What has contributed to the DVCAM format's staying power? Fundamental to the longstanding success of the DVCAM format, is its picture quality. DVCAM uses 8-bit digital component recording with a 5:1 compression ratio and sampling rate of 4:1:1 (for NTSC). This unique compression algorithm is responsible for the format's excellent image capture and superb multi-generation performance. Several significant, recent additions to the DVCAM family have increased the format's continued value to government users, while enhancing the DVCAM product's position of prominence in today's digital video production environment.

. Most recently, Sony expanded its DVCAM camcorder line with the introduction of the DSR-400 and the DSR-450WS models. These new, state-of-the-art camcorders feature a rugged design for use in electronic news gathering, event videography, and electronic cinematography. They offer customers superb image quality combined with an extensive set of performance and ergonomic enhancements. The new camcorders are engineered around three 2/3-inch PowerHAD™ EX CCD imaging sensors. The DSR-450WS is a wide-screen model that can capture images in 60i at 24PsF and 30PsF. It features a slow shutter feature for extreme low-light shooting. The DSR-400 features the same recording capabilities and a 4:3 version of the Power HAD EX CCD.

This high-performance CCD delivers advancements in imaging, including higher dynamic range, sensitivity and a -65 dB signal-to-noise ratio with a -140 dB of vertical smear - characteristics traditionally found in much higher-end products. Refined user ergonomics include an adjustable shoulder pad, precise battery life indicator and menu assignable switches on the side and handle for quick access to frequently used functions. Camera set-ups can also be stored to removable Memory Stick® media for quick, convenient set-up and recall of key parameters.

The camcorders are capable of recording in DVCAM and DV formats, on small or large cassettes with i.LINK® (DV) IEEE-1394 digital interface connectivity. Up to 4 1/2 hours of images can be recorded on a single full-size cassette in DV mode or 3 hours when recording in the highly reliable DVCAM mode.

What else is new in the ever-expanding DVCAM family of products.
. As further evidence of Sony's continued development of the DVCAM format, the company has introduced an upgrade to its most popular DVCAM format camcorder ever -- the DSR-PD150 -- with the debut of the new DSR-PD170. In addition to inheriting the many features that made its predecessor such a mainstay of government production -- from training to news gathering -- the PD170 now includes three 1/3-inch type CCDs, advanced HAD® technology for reduced fixed pattern noise, an optical 12X zoom lens, selectable DVCAM/DV recording, and a newly developed hybrid LCD monitor with a resolution of more than 210,000 pixels.

. For studio use, Sony Electronics has enhanced its DSR series of DVCAM Master Series studio videotape players/recorders with the addition of an integrated i.LINK IEEE-1394 digital interface. The existing DSR-1600, DSR-1800 and DSR-2000 models will be upgraded with this new built-in connectivity feature and re-launched as the DSR-1600A, DSR-1800A and DSR-2000A.

. Sony has also recently introduced two high-definition up-converter boards designed for its DSR series of DVCAM Master Series studio videotape recorder/players. The new DSBK-2020 and DSBK-1820 HD up-converters represent Sony's commitment to creating a bridge for all its professional formats-including quarter-inch and half-inch tape formats-from SD to HD environments with minimal investment required by users.
