Sony 4K Projectors Display Ocean Life at Smithsonian

One of the newest Smithsonian exhibits features 12 Sony 4K SXRD projectors and opens to the public Saturday, Sept. 27.

The National Museum of Natural History in Washington is opening its Sant Ocean Hall, which will feature high-definition video footage of ocean life, displayed using the Sony projectors.

The projectors will display the images - including ones of ocean life in the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, the Channel Islands of California, the Cayman Islands and Belize - onto mirrors which will bounce the images onto the projection screens that make up sections of the exhibit's high-bay walls.

Sony 4K SXRD projectors use mirrors to bounce high-definition video of ocean life onto the museum exhibit's high-bay walls Videographer Feodor Pitcairn, one of the first to use Sony's HDCAM system when it first came out, shot the footage, called "Ocean Odyssey," using Sony's CineAlta HDCAM technology and camera in underwater housings to protect the equipment when shooting underwater.

The 4K resolution allows the projectors to deliver four times the resolution of today's high-definition televisions. Sony's SXRD technology is used in digital cinema and commercial applications worldwide.
