Sony "Green" Initiative

Making products that work well and enhance the lives of both consumers and professional users is important to Sony, but equally important is the goal of preserving the environment and working towards an ecologically safe future. To that end, Sony Electronics has put in place a corporate-wide "green initiative", more officially known as The Sony Group Environmental Vision.

This effort presents a vision and basic approaches for environmental management activities throughout the global Sony Group with the aim of creating a "sustainable society", utilizing efficiencies to manage progress toward the target.

Sony is committed to a program of continuous improvement of global environmental management systems throughout the entire business cycle, which begins with the initial planning for new business activities and continues through the product and service development, marketing, product use, after-sales services, disposal and recycling phases.

In product manufacturing terms, this translates to a new way of designing and producing products, across Sony's professional and business-to-business solutions categories. For example, Sony products now employ a lead-free solder design to make them not only compliant with environmental regulations, but also with a view towards long-term storage and disposal.

Examples of this initiative can be found in products that range from the newly introduced HDW-F900R digital 24P camcorder to professional displays, as well as a variety of decks, cameras and switchers.

The Sony Group Environmental Vision further defines Sony's approach to the following topics:

  • Compliance with regulations
  • Corporate citizenship
  • Disclosure of information and effective corporate communications
  • Education
  • Business planning
  • Research and development
  • Planning and design of products and services
  • Parts and materials procurement
  • Site management
  • Distribution, sales, marketing and after-sales service
  • Post-use resource management
