National crime and terrorist incidents have prompted one of Maryland's largest synagogues to improve the security of its 1,350-member congregation.

Previously, the Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore, Md. had a security system that consisted of a door buzzer, two black-and-white CCTV analog cameras and a part-time guard service.

With heavy traffic pouring in from nearby roadways, different entrances for each of its buildings and large surrounding parking lots, the 175,000 square foot campus which includes four schools with 1,000 students and 250 teachers and staff, a library, playground, sports fields, administration offices, and other structures has close to 1,200 people in the buildings on weekdays, and around 3,500 people during the high holidays. The congregation needed a more reliable, comprehensive monitoring solution to keep an eye on the day-to-day activities of their large operation.

"We've always had access control with locked doors and buzzers and an old black and white CCTV set of cameras at the main entrances," said Ronald Millen, executive director of the Chizuk Amuno Congregation. "But being right on the beltway made us feel vulnerable and we wanted to take the next step."

Millen said the congregation chose Sony IPELA® cameras with the Milestone IP video management software because the open platform allows seamless integration with other systems and devices for flexibility, and because of the convenience of being able to remotely access the cameras from anywhere a computer is present.

"The Jewish community has felt a need to protect itself," Millen said. "Being close to Washington, Baltimore felt a lack of preparedness after 9/11, and there had been some sightings of suspicious people at a nearby Orthodox Jewish school and some vandalism incidents. The Baltimore Jewish Council actively watches developments in this area, working closely with the police, and they recommended that we look into security improvements."

HDXchange: Content Management Made Easier

Ministries are growing in size, often spreading out beyond just one building into a complex of classrooms, bookstores, youth facilities and community centers. This physical growth is being accompanied by a technical evolution, and an increasing need to share data audio, video and Web content across these locations.

To make information sharing easier, more efficient and simpler to manage, Sony's new HDXchange™ system offers a unique approach to workgroup collaboration. The system is specifically suited to environments in which video content is shared among many users.

A New Approach to the Church Bulletin

The mention of informational signage in a house of worship might conjure up familiar images of the "today's sermon" signs often seen on a church lawn or the listing of hymns just off to the side of the altar. These are the big black boards with white letters pieced individually by hand into slots to form words.

Now think of communicating this same information even more effectively using digital signage. This is the use of flat-panel displays to convey graphics, text and other audio/visual elements to specific audiences in a manner that not only holds their attention longer but also makes the message stay in their minds.

Sony Introduces Two Business Projectors With New LCD Panel Technology

First Models to Feature
BrightEra System
Produce 4000 Lumens for Range of B-to-B Applications

With ministries incorporating more audio and video production elements not only into their services but throughout their organizations, their demands for projectors that can accommodate these needs have also increased. Sony is introducing two new projectors that can meet many of a modern ministry's display requirements.

The new VPL-FE40 and VPL-FX40 projectors are the first Sony models to feature BrightEra™ technology. This new LCD panel design produces a higher aperture ratio to deliver brighter images than previous High Temperature Poly-Silicon LCD-based systems and allows the projectors to achieve increased resolution and quieter fan noise.
