Miami's Metro Life Church Expands with SONY HD Technology

Pastors Steve and Mary Alessi"If you’re looking for the best way to get the Word out, to reach the masses, the way to go is to use media," said Steve Alessi, Pastor of Metro Life Church in the Doral metro area of Miami. "And if you’re going to use media, how can you afford to not do it with what is the highest standard of presentation?"

For Alessi, seeking the "highest standard of presentation" means an end-to-end Sony HD production system that includes four HDC-1500 multi-format cameras, two PDW-F350 XDCAM® HD camcorders, an Anycast Station™ live production system, an MFS-2000 multi-format switcher, plus PDW-F70 XDCAM HD decks.
Installation and integration will take place as construction is completed for the church’s new 20,000-square-foot facility (with room to grow to 56,000 square feet) this summer according to Metro Life. But the equipment’s arrival in early April just before the Easter holiday weekend inspired staff and volunteers to make an impromptu temporary setup to capture the occasion.

SONY Highlights Complete HD Systems at NAB 2007

MPEG-2 Video Compression Technology is Focus of "HD for All: Real Systems, Right Now" Theme

HD For All LogoHouses of worship looking to implement new A/V solutions for their ministries found no shortage of options in Sony Electronics’ exhibit at the National Association of Broadcasters convention.

The technologies on display held potential for ministries in a range of applications: broadcasting their services, enhancing their video production capabilities, converting from standard- to high-definition production, streaming their services over the web, and more.

Sony was exhibiting a range of production solutions under the theme of "HD for All: Real Systems, Right Now." Sony demonstrated systems capabilities that make full use of MPEG-2 video compression technology, and also announced several new applications and installations of its high-definition XDCAM® HD optical disc technology.

NAB Virtual Tour

For those who couldn’t make it to Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters convention, Sony provided the next best thing: a "virtual tour" of its exhibit.

Powered by Sony’s Anycast Station™ system, a portable live content production package, people were able to view "on-demand video" that covered the entire range of technologies on display, as well as the stage presentations conducted throughout the show for the XDCAM® products, switcher, SONAPS system and "affordable HD" groups.

"The ability to provide this virtual tour opens the door to a number of opportunities for ministries who can’t make the trip to NAB," said Robin Richards, Sony’s marketing manager for houses of worship. "Being able to virtually walk through the exhibit can allow them to stay up-to-date on the newest products and technologies, without incurring the expense or time required to be there in person."

An MVP for Ministries on the Move

Sony is giving new meaning to remote production with its new Mobile Video Producer (MVP) production unit.

MVP TruckA full-scale HD production unit that can be transported by any vehicle with standard hitching equipment, the MVP unit offers tremendous flexibility for ministries that want to produce and record outdoor services or conduct live events, either for themselves or the community.

"The all-in-one design of the MVP unit can also eliminate the cost of a dedicated cab or tractor, giving the MVP a smaller footprint and greater maneuverability," said Peter DiIorio, senior manager in Sony Electronics’ Solutions Development Group. "Despite its small size, the MVP couples flexibility with a high level of functionality and a full-scale equipment complement. Since many ministries are also tight on personnel resources and often need to rely on volunteers, the MVP can be easily staffed by operators with varying levels of technical knowledge."

SONY Continues the Evolution of XDCAM Tapeless Acquisition Technology

XDCAM

Since its introduction, Sony has delivered more than 21,000 units of its XDCAM® line of tapeless acquisition technology, with many of those in use by houses of worship. At the recent National Association of Broadcasters convention, Sony continued the evolution of the XDCAM family by unveiling new technologies, including recording to ExpressCard™ high-speed flash media, as well as 50 Mbps 4:2:2 optical disc recording.

Sony also unveiled new optical-disc based XDCAM products, including the PDW-F355 camcorder, PDW-F75 deck, a dual-layer 50GB optical disc, and the PDW-U1 external drive. These models join the growing family of XDCAM products.

"The XDCAM technology offers a host of production options for houses of worship," said Robin Richards, marketing manager for houses of worship at Sony Electronics. "The system’s flexibility in a studio or on a remote shoot can help a ministry get their word out to a greater audience, either over the air or over the Web. For example, during a service or production, crews can review footage they just shot easily with random immediate access, and then when live action occurs, as soon as they hit ‘record’, they are ready to start capturing again."

SONY Unveils Next Generation of HD Studio Cameras with Dual-Format Capability

With more ministries expanding their broadcast capabilities – whether from the main sanctuary or from a remote location during an outdoor production – the need for more flexible camera systems is increasing greatly.

To meet this need, Sony’s new dual-format camera system, model HDC-1400, is designed for HD studio or regional production and can offer a lower-cost entry into HD for ministries who do not require full multi-format capabilities, but still need a high level of signal format flexibility.

HDC-1400

"The HDC-1400 system expands our line of flexible HD production tools," said Rob Willox, director of marketing for content creation at Sony Electronics.

The new camera system operates in either 1080/59.94i or 720/59.94P mode. The system shares the vast majority of the image-making capabilities of the existing HDC-1500 system, including three-skin detail control, multi matrix color control and high-quality SD down conversion capability.
