New York Rep Makes Loud Noise

Pirates operating off the coast of Somalia who tried to take control of the Princess Line cruise ship Seaborn Spirit, were stunned when their attack was repelled by an Sony FCB-EX1010ear-splitting beam of sound. With the help of Rycam Technologies, the innovative less-than-lethal piece of equipment, known as Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, was mounted on the cruise ship for that exact reason.

This extraordinary devise, which was packaged by Moog Inc., of East Aurora, NY, is also seeing action in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 400 units have been deployed by the U.S. military to flush insurgents out of mosques and from inside caves.

David Ryan, President of Rycam Technologies, worked with Moog on defining their requirements for this application. "Moog required a built in long zoom lens and high sensitivity sensor to be able to identify possible threats at long distances", says Ryan, "by bringing in the Sony team we were able to help identify the best possible solution. It quickly became apparent that image stabilization would be a key factor, especially on a ship where wave action can effect an image zoomed to its full telephoto length. The Sony solution worked because of the support an speed at which we responded and solved the customers application requirements. The unique application of sound and video being used as a non-lethal deterrent to piracy and/or terrorism was one of the most interesting and memorable application I've been involved with in a long time, it's a great feeling to know you are helping to keep people safe around the world, my hats off to everyone involved!"

LRAD is designed to deliver loud and clear audible messages in English and dozen of other languages to unidentified individuals approaching a ship, vehicle or fixed location with unknown intent. Because LRAD's sound can be so tightly focused on the target intruders, it was critical that the operator knows exactly where the unit is being focused. Additionally, visual verification of the intruders was also of paramount interest. On such a critical application, the Sony FCB-EX1010, was the camera of choice. High zoom range, auto focus and 530 TV lines of resolution were extremely important in the decision to go with Sony.
