Sony and XOS Technologies Announce Full Integration Between XDCAM Technology and XOS Thunder Coaching Analysis Platform

XOS Technologies, a national sports digital media company, has teamed with Sony Electronics and integrated its XOS Thunder™ digital coaching analysis platform with Sony's XDCAM optical disc technology. The fully integrated combination of XDCAM and XOS Thunder technologies enables sports organizations to leverage metadata and a file-based workflow for a more efficient video review and analysis of games and practices.

During the American Football Coaches Association convention in Orlando, Fla. this week, XOS will demonstrate XOS Thunder Football, the first major application to support DVCAM .mxf files shot by XDCAM camcorders. Through the application's "Planning Metadata" feature, team video directors can tag plays by using a numeric keypad as the footage is being captured.

"With such a short amount of time between games, coaches can't afford to spend time shuttling through footage to find the clips they need," said Kaori Uno, workflow manager for Sony Electronics. "The enhanced compatibility of Thunder and XDCAM technology lets them work more efficiently, spending time on reviewing and analyzing team performance."

Sony's XDCAM system delivers tapeless, file-based production, including the ability to easily browse footage, high-speed transfer of proxy A/V and high-resolution data, and immediate random access to data. The use of Sony XDCAM HD camcorders can also allow video directors to be ready for HD capture when that transition takes place.

Once video is acquired using XDCAM camcorders, it can be ingested into an XOS Thunder workstation at speeds greater than real time, with all associated metadata attached to each clip. The XDCAM system's Planning Metadata allows the video director to define "play marks" during games and practices, which can be used to easily sort content and quickly find clips.

"Sony and XOS worked closely to optimize the import operation to make sure the media could move as quickly as possible from the XDCAM media to the Thunder system," said Steve Quinn, XOS chief technology officer. "The result is transfer times that are 2-3 times faster than real-time."
