SONY’S SXRD 4K PROJECTORS CHOSEN TO SERVE THE U.S. NAVY

PARK RIDGE, NJ, Nov. 28, 2007 – Sony announced this week at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) that its SXRD™ 4K projection technology will be installed at the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado located in San Diego, Calif. The projectors will be used as part of a complete simulator trainer developed by Video Display Corporation (VDC), a leader in the simulation display industry, to support the Navy’s advanced Multipurpose Supporting Arms Trainer (MSAT) program.

The VDC display system will include three Sony SXRD 4K projectors, model number SRX-S105. The highly adaptable projectors have been modified by VDC to meet the Navy’s requirements for the project.

“We are proud to say that the servicemen who train with these visual display systems equipped with Sony SXRD 4K technology will get one of the most immersive and realistic simulation and training experiences available today,” said Andre Floyd, marketing manager for SXRD technology at Sony Electronics. “Sony’s SXRD 4K projection systems are the only projectors in the marketplace today capable of producing 8.8 million pixels of resolution – making 4K a crucial component of the Navy’s MSAT program.”

Sony’s ultra high-resolution SXRD 4K projectors eliminate the need to use numerous projection systems, which are typically required to operate the content-heavy display systems that support MSAT programs. With its ability to produce high-definition content, a single SXRD 4K projector can do the job of several competitive units.

“By cutting the number of projectors used in the display system, MSAT programs across the U.S. can increase their operational cost-effectiveness, which in turn allows more servicemen access to some of the most technologically advanced visualization and simulation training available on the market,” Floyd said.

The MSAT program was created to provide key personnel including Terminal Air Controllers (JTACs), Forward Air Controllers (FACs), Forward Observers (FOs) and Close Arms Support (CAS) with simulated joint training exercises in all aspects of artillery, mortar, and naval combat situations.

The system devised by VDC offers trainees the critical ability to access day, twilight, and night-time setups, which enable users to utilize regularly issued field equipment such as night-vision goggles with the unit.

“The Navy’s choice to install our VDC engineered system built with Sony SXRD 4K projection at the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado is very pleasing to all of us who’ve worked together to develop the state-of-the-art simulation and training technology that went into this unit,” said Marcial Vidal, president at VDC Display Systems. “Our hats go off to Sony for developing the 4K projectors that are a big part of what makes these units a step above the rest.” Sony’s SXRD 4K large venue projectors lineup includes four different models including the SRX-R105, SRX-R110 and the SRX-S105 and SRX-S110. The projectors provide numerous options including interface, ANSI lumen count and lensing. For more information about Sony SXRD please visit www.sony.com/sxrd.

The I/ITSEC show taking place in Orlando FL from November 26 - 29 promotes cooperation among the Armed Services, Industry, Academia and various Government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs.
